Every school has routines that help make everything run smoothly. Your life as a teacher in the school will be a lot more serene if you learn more about and understand your school's particular routines.
For example do you know your school's policy for:
- Sending a student to the office for discipline?
- Allowing students to visit the restrooms or other rooms during class time?
- Where students may eat lunch?
- How visitors check into the school?
- Students leaving school early or arriving to school late?
- Reporting absent or tardy students?
- Turning in grades?
- Faculty meetings and teacher preparation/planning days?
- Parent conferences?
- Dismissing students for transportation?
Policy for these and many more situations is usually outlined in a school handbook. Read yours carefully as well as any materials that are given to students and parents dealing with school policy, such as a student or family handbook. If it is helpful to you, ask another person, a friend, spouse or family member, to verbally "quiz" you on the school handbook.
You may need to ask the school office staff for clarification on school routines and procedures. Any situation you do not understand how to handle, ask a veteran teacher or your administrative supervisor.
Pay special attention to all information placed in your school mailbox and posted on bulletin boards in the office, teachers' area or hallways.
You must be absolutely certain of all school policies for yourself and for your students.
