Unfortunately, not every contact with parents and caregivers is pleasant and positive. Even experienced teachers do not look forward to difficult encounters with student families. However, experienced teachers do know that when there's a problem, it is best to tackle it calmly with rational behavior. Here are four important steps to deal with tough situations.

  • First of all, when discussing problems with parents, briefly describe the situation and then allow the parent to speak. Some parents may be angry, hurt, frustrated, embarrassed, or confused by the information you are giving them. Show respect for their feelings by allowing them to express themselves or by asking them to clarify what they are saying.

  • Remain calm but remember that you do not need to put up with abuse in any way. If a parent is completely out of control, excuse yourself and find a colleague or administrator to assist the situation. Also, it's a good idea to notify your principal immediately if you suspect the parent plans to contact the principal, school board or superintendent.

  • When the meeting is over, fill out a Contact Sheet for documentation.

  • Finally, no matter how upset you may feel, it is important that you respect the student/parent confidentiality. Select someone you trust, either a colleague or an administrator, if you feel you want to further discuss the meeting.
