My very first day on my very first job, I walked down the hall and introduced myself to the other teachers on my wing. One of them said to me, "Oh, you're the new EH teacher? None of us really wanted you over here on our wing because last year those kids were so disruptive. But the principal said there was no way around it, so I guess we'll all just have to make the best of it." My smile was frozen on my face and my stomach churned. I thought I was going to cry, but instead I just told her that I was happy to be there and I vowed to myself that I would motivate my kids to have the best year ever. It took a lot of self-talk for me not to lose my own enthusiasm and allow myself to feel unwanted. I knew how much my students needed me to show them that they mattered and that I cared. By the end of the year the other teachers were constantly making comments about how wonderful my students were. It felt great. - Bonnie, 24 years, EH teacher
